Summer is getting closer which means we will be spending more time outdoors in the sun. Protecting our skin from harmful UV rays can help prevent premature signs of aging as well as sun damage that can potentially lead to skin cancer. Since May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, Atagi Plastic Surgery and Skin Aesthetics wants to emphasize the importance of sun protection!
Did you know that UV rays continue to harm your skin for up to three hours after leaving the sun? Even if you spend only a few minutes outdoors, your skin can experience hours of sun damage afterwards. It is essential to protect your skin by reapplying sunblock when necessary, staying in the shade and covering up with clothing to minimize sun exposure.
Repeated and unprotected sun exposure can potentially lead to Skin Cancer. Skin cancer occurs when sun-damaged cells grow, mutate and multiply to form tumors, or melanoma. These abnormal cells can form due to overexposure to the sun or tanning beds.
It is impossible to avoid the sun completely, especially this time of year. Be prepared by always having sunblock, a hat or umbrella with you. Don’t let sun damage ruin your summer fun! Enjoy the weather while protecting your skin as much as possible.
