For a woman, the goal of chin enhancement is to improve facial proportion as opposed to drawing attention to the chin. The specifics of chin augmentation vary, as the procedure is always tailored to the individual needs of the patient. The two most popular methods of chin augmentation are:
Chin implant: A small incision is made in the natural crease under the chin/jaw followed by creation of a pocket for the implant between the skin and bone of the chin. Dr. Atagi then inserts and evaluates sizers the exact contour and dimensions of different implants. This allows her to select the best-fit implant for the patient. The implant adds volume and definition. Recovery time is minimal. “Some patients are out and about at the mall the next day,” said Dr. Atagi. “We do ask patients to minimize strenuous activities for a couple of weeks.”
Injectable fillers: Injectable facial fillers, such as Belotero®, Juvéderm® and Radiesse® can be used to temporarily enhance the chin. The fillers can be injected in-office, and the effect is immediate. “If you’re interested in a chin augmentation, but not ready to sign up for a surgical procedure, an injectable is something that can be done at any time. It’s a nice way to ‘try out’ chin augmentation,” Dr. Atagi says. The up-front cost for fillers is less than a chin augmentation with an implant – but if you want permanent enhancement, a chin implant is less expensive over the long run.
