Did you know that July is National UV Safety Month? While it’s important to always practice sun safety, we thought we could use this opportunity to re-iterate its importance.
Practicing sun safety is about more than skin’s appearance, though it is unquestionable that sun exposure ages and damages the skin. Did you know that over 90% of facial ageing, like fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation, for example, sunspots and age spots, are due to sun exposure and sun damage? Yikes!
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends an SPF of at least 30 every day, regardless of season. Broad-spectrum protection means sunscreen protects against both UVA & UVB rays. Not quite sure what the difference is?
UVA rays are constantly present, no matter the season or weather. They can even sometimes penetrate glass! UVA rays are responsible for much of skin’s ageing because they can deeply penetrate the surface of the skin, damaging the cells beneath.
UVB rays, on the other hand, are the rays you can blame when you get sunburned and are responsible for most skin cancers.
This is why it’s extremely important to have a water-resistant sunscreen that protects against both. Here at Atagi Plastic Surgery & Atagi Skin Aesthetics, we recommend our very own Atagi Skin Melashade, also known as Melashade-E. Formulated with micronized titanium and zinc oxides and fortified with antioxidant melanin, this sunblock is both fragrance and preservative free. In addition to being suited for all skin types and tones, it won’t stain your skin white, or cause that dreaded too-shiny complexion.
If you’ve already established a sun safety routine and it’s the cosmetic effects of sun damage that are bothering you, we can certainly be of service. Our surgical skin rejuvenation services such as facelift and necklift can address skin laxity resulting from sun exposure, and laser treatments such as photo facials can eliminate hyperpigmentation quickly and easily. Ultherapy, our newest skin rejuvenation service, is also a wonderful (and non-surgical!) option.
