If you’re feeling off these days, you’re in good company. From social distancing to self-quarantines, COVID-19 has disrupted life as we know it, and we all know how stressful change can be. While it’s one thing to feel stressed for a day or two, our bodies simply aren’t programmed to process chronic stress. So if you’re struggling with low energy, depression or anxiety right now, there are three things we’d like to say to you: “1) Hang in there!; 2) You’re not alone!; and 3) We are here for you!” If you would like to schedule a virtual consultation, please call us at 303.327.7300 today!
In the meantime, don’t forget to take care of yourself and put your needs first right now. Here are a few simple tips we’ve put together to help you remain calm and carry on during this uncertain time, no appointments necessary.
Laugh more!
When was the last time you had a good laugh? If you can’t remember, you’re watching the news too often! Laughter is truly the best medicine. It relieves stress, lowers blood pressure, boosts endorphins and calms you down. Even now, with so many serious headlines looming, it’s okay to interject some levity into your life. In fact, it’s not only okay to laugh, it’s the doctor’s orders! So, put on a comedy or watch some pet videos today.
Stay in the present.
All of this uncertainty is further proof that we can only focus on what we do know, which is the here and now. When you find your mind trailing off and worrying about the future, remember to bring yourself back to the moment and replace your worries with a single thought of gratitude. “I am grateful for my pet,” or “I am grateful that my family is well.” The more you can remind yourself to stay focused on the present and positive, the better off your mood will be, according to research on positive psychology. But don’t worry if you have to remind yourself several times throughout the day! It’s not about perfection. The effort truly counts here!
Get walking.
We know you’ve heard this countless times by now, but we’re concerned that you may not be following this crucial piece of advice because anxiety has a sneaky way of making us lose our motivation to do much of anything. If you’re finding yourself in a rut of self-isolation, like so many of us, we have three words for you: Just. Do. It. It doesn’t matter if you don’t feel like it. The goal is to get outside for even a few minutes a day. The research is in, and breaking up your day with short walks helps improve focus and reduce stress. Walking also happens to be one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself, so this simple tip is probably one of the most important self-care tools ever. No exaggeration.
