A recent article published on ThePlasticSurgeryChannel.com discussed the importance of finding a board-certified plastic surgeon – like Dr. Tanya Atagi in Denver, CO. Whether you’re considering a surgical procedure, like breast augmentation, tummy tuck or liposuction, or a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation service, such as BOTOX®, photofacials or Ultherapy®, it’s extremely important that the physician performing or overseeing these treatments has the necessary experience and certification for patient safety and beautiful results.
“It’s so important to do your research,” says Dr. Atagi. To help you in your search to identify the right doctor, keep in mind the points outlined below.
Make sure your physician is a board-certified plastic surgeon. Some state laws allow doctors who are not board-certified plastic surgeons to perform aesthetic services, such as a board-certified OBGYN or a board-certified family practice physician.
Beware of bogus boards. “We looked at the credentials of several popular physicians’ websites that happen to do plastic surgery. It showed they were board certified in things like Anti-Aging and Regenerative medicine, but found nothing on the website about being board certified in plastic surgery,” advises ThePlasticSurgeryChannel.com.
Cosmetic surgeons aren’t necessarily plastic surgeons. Be aware that physicians cannot be board-certified cosmetic surgeons, only plastic surgeons. When a doctor advertises themself as a “cosmetic surgeon”, this does not always mean they have the necessary training to perform plastic surgery procedures.
Look for the logo. When looking at a physician’s website, be on the look out for the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) or the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), pictured here.
