Good news for runners, weight lifters and fitness fanatics of all kinds! The New York Times recently just published surprising new research about the skin and anti-aging benefits of exercise. Yes, you read that right – apparently exercise can do more than benefit your body; it can also help skin look younger for longer!
Researchers at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada found that after age 40, individuals who exercised frequently had markedly thinner, healthier stratum corneums, the outermost layer of the dermis, which resulted in younger-looking skin. “Their skin was much closer in composition to that of the 20- and 30-year-olds than to that of others of their age, even if they were past age 65,” the article stated.
Have you been less than diligent about going to the gym? Not to worry. Researchers also examined the anti-aging benefits of exercise for those beginning a new routine after age 65: “Researchers set a group of sedentary volunteers to exercising, after first obtaining skin samples…The volunteers were aged at 65 or older and, at the study’s start, had normal skin for their age. They began a fairly straightforward endurance-training program…This continued for three months. At the end of that time, the researchers again biopsied the volunteers’ skin but now the samples looked quite different, with outer and inner layers that looked very similar to those of 20- to 40-year-olds.”
“These new findings are certainly in line with what we’ve seen in our practice,” says Dr. Atagi, board-certified Denver plastic surgeon, “and this is one of the examples where inner health and outer appearance are linked. This also includes attaining hormone balance. These new findings are great encouragement for those seeking a healthier lifestyle as these are areas within our control. This is in contrast to many other factors that can impact physical aging, such as genetics and previous sun exposure, which are not.”
