A man’s skin is very different from a woman’s. Men generally have thicker skin, and most use a razor daily. What’s more, men are less likely to fuss with their skin than women, and so appreciate simple but effective skin conditioning tips. Here are a few easy to follow suggestions:
Never use bar soap.
The binders that hold a bar of soap together are in an alkaline base (high pH balance), which will strip water and natural oils out of the skin, causing the surface of the skin to dehydrate. Instead of soap, use a low-foaming cleansing gel that will still give a deep pore cleaning, but won’t leave the skin feeling tight and dry. The skin cells need to stay hydrated in order to be healthy. Dry skin can aggravate acne and other skin sensitivities. Our Atagi Skin, Foamy or Creamy Lacticleanse cleansers are great options.
Use a shaving gel instead of foam.
Most men understand that the key to a comfortable shave is to begin by conditioning to soften the hairs and hair follicles. This is especially important if you’re prone to ingrown hairs. Many men shave after showering when the skin is moist, but for sensitive skin, that may not be enough. Use an emollient-based shaving cream to help soften the skin and follicles or a gel-based shaving cream that will instantly lubricate and hydrate, lessening irritation, rashes, and ingrown hairs.
Wear moisturizer with sunscreen.
The number one cause of skin aging is exposure to sunlight. For this reason, it is important to keep the skin protected by using a moisturizer with sun protection year round. Our Obagi and Atagi Skin Sunscreen/Sunblocks are among our most popular products.
Get deep pore cleansing facials every change of season.
Men are prone to blackheads and clogged pores mostly on the nose and forehead. The safest and most effective way to get those pores cleaned out is with a professional facial. Yes, men who are in the loop know enough to get regular facials.
Avoid using alcohol-based aftershave.
While many men like the clean and tight feeling associated with using alcohol-based aftershaves, in reality alcohol-based aftershaves can lead to dead skin cell buildup, keeping hair trapped in the skin, leading to more ingrown hairs and sensitivity. Keep in mind that alcohol is a drying dehydrating agent. Instead, try a calming, oil-free moisturizer to soothe the skin after a shave.
