We’re not sure why, but autumn seems to be the season for making major skin care blunders. With summer behind us and cooler weather settling in, we start noticing one big mistake in particular—sunscreen getting demoted to the back of the medicine chest in favor of “lighter” SPF formulations or, (gasp!) no SPF at all. Can you imagine? Well, maybe you can.
Sunscreen is not just vital to preventing sun damage in the summer months. It is essential for maintaining your skin’s health and vibrance year-round.
A recent study published in Dermatologic Surgery sought to measure the effects of daily sunscreen use for a year. After following 32 women, they discovered that daily sunscreen application did much more than just prevent sunburns. Sunscreen actually improved the appearance of skin, decreasing many signs of photoaging, including dullness, crow’s feet and uneven skin tone and texture.
The scientists theorize that sunscreen helps your skin help itself. When the skin is exposed to UV rays, it goes into a sort of fight and repair mode, expending all its energy to mend the damage. When skin is consistently protected from the sun, it frees skin up to do what skin does best—keeping healthy skin healthy.
