It helped the Egyptians build the pyramids.
The Greeks recognized it as “dividing a line in the extreme and mean ratio.”
The Renaissance artists referred to it as divine Proportion.
It was used in the design of Notre Dame in Paris.
What is “It”? “It” is a ratio or proportion defined by the ancient number Phi = 1.618033988749895… which can be derived with a number of geometric constructions, each of which divides a line at a unique point. Also known as “The Golden Ratio,” this ratio has been used by mankind for centuries in construction and it appears it this mysterious number is also found in the proportions of the human body, the spiral of a seashell, the solar system, in music and even in our DNA. It was perhaps most famously depicted in the classic drawing by Leonardo da Vinci, where a naked man with outstretched arms is enclosed in a circle.
Today, plastic surgeons like Dr. Tanya A. Atagi Medical Director and board-certified plastic surgeon at Denver’s Atagi Plastic Surgery and Atagi Skin Aesthetics use symmetry and proportion to determine your results. The Golden Ratio is still used as a reference for beauty and harmony. Dr. Atagi says, “I am very fortunate to have earned a BS in product Design Engineering and a BA in Art Design. It has provided me with a deep understanding of balance, proportion and harmony in plastic surgery. With this understanding, I do not have to follow a cookie cutter approach to cosmetic surgery. I can tailor make each treatment or procedure to enhance the individuals beauty. We can have some much at our disposal to change the shape of the face and body. We have powerful fillers like Juvéderm® and Restylane®. We have neuromodulators like BOTOX®. We can adjust skin tension with lifting procedures. We can reduce the waist with liposuction and enhance the curve of the breasts to create a universally appealing hour glass shape.”
