Liposuction May Reduce “Bad Fat”

February 24, 2012 by Atagi Plastic Surgery & Skin Aesthetics

A new study* presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) in Denver, found that triglyceride levels went down an average of 43% after liposuction (laser liposuction included) in patients who started with elevated triglyceride (a kind of fat found in the blood that can increase the risk of heart disease if present in levels that are too high) levels.

“These findings suggest that patients who are considering liposuction who have at-risk triglyceride levels may reduce their risk of developing these serious health problems, while correcting body disproportions,” said the study author. “Patients not only look better, but may be healthier too.”

The study also reported an 11% decrease in white blood cell counts among those surveyed. High white blood cell counts have been linked to heart disease, obesity, hypertension and diabetes. Still, the author warns, patients with very high triglyceride levels should not see liposuction as a replacement for medications that reduce triglyceride levels.

Dr. Atagi states, “Frequently, my patients have put in a lot of work prior to making their appointment at Atagi Plastic Surgery & Atagi Skin Aesthetics.  Our health conscious, on-the-go patients head to the gym, take advantage of the outdoor Colorado lifestyle, sustain sound eating habits and work to feel good about themselves inside and out. I partner with these patients to put the finishing touches on diet and exercise resistant areas.  I am even more pleased when I can improve their health, too.”Our practice helps these patients reflect their inner spirit.”
